Saitan theatre group is back again with their much appreciated Hindi courtroom drama ‘Qaidi No.666’. This time the story revolves around Rajasthani premise and the name is changed to ‘DAAKIN DEBI’.
Witchcraft, in the urban imagination, is part of myths and stories and foreign folklore. Many of us were regaled by stories of Baba Yaga in Russian folktales and the witch in the German fairy-tale of Hansel and Gretel. We learnt about the European witch-hunt of the Middle Ages through history textbooks which recounted the fact of women being charged with apostasy and heresy and consequently burnt at the stake for sorcery.
Debi Chautiyal has been convicted of murdering her husband. All witnesses and evidences strongly prove her to be guilty, though the motive of the murder remains a mystery. Dead silence on the part of Debi strengthens the case against her. Her family is deeply involved in witchcraft and the worship of Devil. So the people believe that she is a witch and killed her husband as a part of a ritual, and are very agitated about it.
However, Debi’s defense lawyer, Ms. Raunak Rathore genuinely feels that she is innocent and helpless and sedulously tries to understand her case and make her stand respectfully acquitted. Raunak’s sympathy springs from her painful past where she lost her husband in an accident. Raunak Rathore, eventually, fails to force speech of revelation out of Debi and feels annoyingly defeated in the process. The lawyer in opposition, very influential, Mr. Munjaal is already celebrating the tacit victory he is confident to flaunt as the court hearing would reach its end.
What has made Debi so silent that it’s almost demeaning?
Will Raunak ever get the glimpse of Debi’s silently guarded unspoken truth?
Will Raunak reconcile with the troubled idea of loss of one’s love?
Will Munjaal cherish his triumph?
