Rukmini Devi Arundale
Rukmini Devi Arundale was a renowned Bharatnatyam dancer and choreographer. Along with that she was an activist for animal rights and welfare. She also got the honour to be the first woman in Indian History to be nominated as the Rajya Sabha member.
Mrinalini Sarabhai, an Indian Bharatnatyam dancer and the founder of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, an institute for imparting training in dance, drama, music and puppetry, in the city of Ahmedabad. Her daughter, Mallika Sarabhai is also a famous Indian classical dancer and activist.
Tanjore Balasaraswati, also known by her last name Balasaraswati was a celebrated Bharatnatyam dancer. Her work was recognised and awarded with a Padma Bhushan in 1957 and a Padma Vibhushan in 1977 by the Government of India.
Rajkumar Singhajit Singh, a celebrated name in Bharatanatyam, also co-owns the ‘Manipuri Nrityashram’ a Manipuri dance school, in New Delhi. He is the recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Padma Shri, which were awarded to him for his contribution to the Manipuri dance.
Alarmel Valli, the Padma Bhushan recipient Bharatnatyam dancer from Chennai is a celebrated practitioner of the art. She teaches Bharatanatyam at Dipashikha, a centre for fine arts in Chennai, founded by her. Moreover, she is the second youngest female dancer to be conferred the President’s award of Padmashri.
